Urban Safari Berlin

In September 2019 we arranged and hosted a “Bauhaus Safari“ in Berlin and Dessau for a group of danish architects from the studio Mejeriet.

We had three wonderful days together, celebrating the 100 year anniversary of the birth of the Bauhaus movement – and exploring the Bauhaus history; visiting the new Bauhaus Museum Dessau, checked out the Bauhaus Building that housed the Bauhaus school from 1926 to 1932, and were on guided tours in the Masters’ Houses. We attended exhibitions in Berlin like; ‘Original Bauhaus’ in Berlinische Gallerie and ‘Bauhaus and modernism in Berlin and Tel Aviv’ at ‘Freiraum in der Box’. We also visited the Mies van der Rohe Haus, had a sunny walk in the Onkel Toms Hütte area, where several Bauhaus houses are build – and had a little ‘detour’ to the Corbusierhaus in Berlin-Charlottenburg.

All ‘supported’ with a lot of walks, talks and discussions – delicious food and splendid wines. The safari ended with a very cosy dinner in Camillo’s Kitchen.

Give us a call or an email if you want us to arrange a tour in Berlin for you and your company or organisation. We do architecture, design, start-up, Bauhaus and food safaris in the lively and inspiring city.

Learning from Berlin #2

Lower East Lab arrange and host intense inspiration tours in our city Berlin, named Urban Safari Berlin. We focus mainly on new business, the startup scene, creative spaces – and on food, architecture and design.

Berlin is for us a wonderful spot to explore, think of new ideas, rethink the old ones, wonder about how funny & ’edgy’ some projects can be. We have experienced, that just a couple of days in this city, can be a good solid boost of energy and a very welcome creative break from the daily routines for our guests.

When travelling the city, we carefully have in mind to not only ’take’ from the city and its people, but also ’give’ something back. We don’t want to behave as stupid tourists, only using and receiving, we have a deep wish to leave the places and people we visit and talk with, enriched, inspired and with a feeling of ’Oh! How good that we invited these guys to our place’.

At our safari last week, we among many other places visited Kühlhaus Berlin, an impressive place in Kreuzberg where arts exhibitions, fashion fairs, concerts and hundreds of other funky things happens. After a very inspiring guided tour on all 6 floors, we held a creative brainstorm with our participants (students from KaosPilots Switzerland and friends), and presented a lively selected list of “what we would love to see happen in the house“. Our ideas and input was very welcomed by Kühlhaus Berlin.

Our next safaris will be in September and October, excact dates not fixed yet. If interested, please reach out for more info.

Want to check out Kühlhaus Berlin?

Learning from Berlin

Impressions from our Urban Safari Berlin by Lower East Lab this week. An interested group of students from the KaosPilots Switzerland joined us for a 2day tour-de-Berlin. Looking for inspiration, sharing stories, hearing about and reflecting on success and failure. Checking the startup scene. Meeting Sissel from Startup Guide Berlin and Rune from TrunkBird. Discussing being a tourist or a traveller. Talking, enjoying – and biking. Two wonderful days.

Urban Safari Berlin October 2015

Lower East Lab invites you on a urban safari in wonderful Berlin. In October. Could be cool if you want to join. Read all about it under the picture.

UrbanSafariBerlinOCT2015

Need inspiration? Want to meet people, discuss good and new ideas?

Come join us on an intense 2day Urban Safari Berlin. We have on 21 and 22 October 2015 put together a journey for you in this urban jungle, with special focus on inspiring new business, creative spaces and the co-working scene.

Berlin is a very lively and a very inspiring city! It is a melting pot of start-ups, young (and older) entrepreneurs, fresh initiatives, inspiring atmospheres, cool exhibition venues, an innovative food scene and just amazing spots and corners.

Berlin is a perfect spot to explore, think of new ideas, rethink the old ones, wonder about how funny & crazy some projects can be – and simply enjoy the love for new, small and bigger beautiful things.

We have experienced, that just a couple of days in this city, can be a good solid boost of energy and a very welcome creative break from the daily routines.

The Urban Safari Berlin is a initiative of Lower East Lab Berlin. They organize and host the safari’s – the first one held in November ‘12, in April and May ‘13, and again in May ’14 and June ’15.

The deal is:

• We will start on wednesday morning October 21th at 10:00 in Lower East Lab in Kreuzberg, the lab will be our class room during the safari days.
• We will be a group of around 8-12 curious and interesting people like yourself.
• We will be safaring on bikes, and on foot, by U-bahn – and again on bikes, the most fun way to explore and stop and go again.
• We will have time to follow our noses, our instincts, enjoy the crème-de-la-crème of the Urban Safari and Lower East exploration so far in this town.
• In the lab we will share inspiration and inputs, we can listen and discuss – have time to reflect, to sketch, to laugh and to enjoy.
• We will be done by thursday October 22th at 18:00. Here we finish with a glass of ‘see you again’ wine.

Together with Camillos Kitchen, we will all put up a playful and inspiring dinner in the lab on the first night. Camillos Kitchen is a pop-up (mostly in Berlin, Copenhagen and Bern) restaurant with gorgeous food and remarkable wines. That alone is worth the journey.

After the safari, you will receive a rich visual documentation on your days in Berlin.
Are you ready for this adventure with us?

If, here comes the small-printed stuff:
• You sign up with an e-mail to Jørgen Smidstrup. First come, first serve.
• You book your own flight or travels to Berlin.
• You book your own overnight stays. We suggest you some beautiful places like Hüttenpalast, Michelberger or IMA Lofts. Or find a flat on Airbnb, we can get you in contact with fine private flats as well.
• Your costs will be €550 for the two days in the urban jungle. Guides, food and drinks for the time between the first day at 10:00 to the second day at 18:00, bike rentals, U-bahn tickets, and the class room and kitchen facilities are covered in this.
• Empty your head. Bring comfortable clothes and shoes, your favorite notebook, your best pens, some kind of a camera, and your toothbrush.

If curious, you can get some impressions from the lower east safari life on here on our blog and on facebook:

What’s going on in the lab?

What’s going on in the Lower East Lab? These mid of July days are somehow calm. We are still working on 3-4 graphic design projects and trying to finish stuff by the end of the week – and we are getting closer and closer to a long-awaited holiday break.

We are really, really happy with our lab here in Berlin! The last 2-3 months we have had so many sweet, cool, funny, talented, interesting and interested people in the lab, for many different reasons and purposes. Thanks for that!

Just to mention some of the arrangements and events that has happened in the Lower East Lab:
• in May we had 15 architects from the Danish company, Mejeriet, on an Urban Safari – cruising Berlin on bikes with us, getting inspired and checking out “transformations“ in this wonderful city. The group of architects finished the evening, co-creating with us a delicious dinner, Camillo’s Paladar, in the lab.
• also in May we arranged a day-long Food Safari, for a group of (around 20) students, studying global nutrition and health at the Copenhagen-based school Metropol. After a introduction in the lab, we met with people, checked out new and inspiring food projects, visited food markets and tested delicious stuff ’unterwegs’. All day on bikes, daring to end the day with a tasting of german white wines…
• later in May we had an even larger group in the lab, attending Hack the City to discuss THE FUTURE OF WORK. The workshop was arranged by the Swedish city of Sundbyberg and was facilitated by the Stockholm-and-Malmö based innovation company Shuhuu.
• we have our monthly dinner in the lab; Camillo’s Cafeteria, where up to 20 people from the Berlin ’international scene’ show up, meet, talk, eat and drink a glass of wine (or two). We will be back with the cafeterias from August on. We also held three successful Camillo’s Chef’s Table, private dinnners in the lab during the spring.
• we managed to include a gastro teambuilding in the program; a group of 9 leaders from a pension fund showed up in the lab and under guidance from Chef Camillo, the group created a three course lunch dinner with three house favorites; potato-rosemary pizza, white asparagus and a asparagus-leeks-parmesan risotto. The process and teambuilding went very well. The food was delicious and the atmosphere fantastic.
• in June, a group of KaosPilot students from Switzerland joined our two day Urban Safari Berlin. On bikes, we checked out the inspiring start-up scene in the city, met and talked with creative and lively people. During the safari days the lab worked as a ’class room’ for sharing and reflecting. The safari turned out as planned and was very succesful. We are really happy with our urban safari concept!
• besides all this, we have managed to do a lot of good work during spring with our main ’thing’; the graphic design and communication. With great help from two trainees, Casper from Denmark and Amanda from Sweden, we, among other things, designed a book for Glasmuseum Ebeltoft, a brand new website for another art client – Hempel Glasmuseum, a visual identity for a swiss consultant, a series of posters for the KaosPilots Switzerland, a new website for a Berlin client – a big old factory which has developed into a cultural art and event space, one for a Swiss client and right now deeply in the design process with a new book for a Danish client, the book will come out this autumn.

Have a fantastic summer out there!

New Business in Lower East Lab

Last week we had a three day NEW BUSINESS WORKSHOP here in the Lower East Lab. The 6th module of NEW BUSINESS, a one year further training (9 modules of three days each) for people who want to grow their project ideas into sustainable and inspiring businesses – a mastery program for passionate entrepreneurs with existing and new projects and business dreams.

This 6th module we placed here in Berlin. The training normally takes place in the Innovations Dorf in Bern (the home and house of the KaosPilots Switzerland, changels, New Business and many other projects and companies).

The focus of our module 6 is on interrelatedness and timing. This means a focus on:
• How is my business idea connected to other cycles right now?
• What else is going on around me… in nature, in the environment, in society, in groups and companies…?
• And how can we use these cycles for best possible timing of our own dreams and actions?

This module is also about becoming aware of trends and tendencies, so we can use them for our own business design.
• What are others doing?
• How can we be inspired by that for our own actions?

The fine group of people attending NEW BUSINESS, showed up in Berlin with their expectations high up – and we had three fantastic days!

We did our very best, used all the good stuff from the Lower East toolbox to put together some good and inspiring days. Used our experiences from counseling, teaching, working with communication and design, adding splashes of Urban Safari Berlin, adding food, recipes and spices from the Camillo’s Kitchen – supplying with the warmth and calmness the lab can also offer.

If you are curious to know more about the mastery program (a new programme will start May 2015 (intro) / September 2015 (first module)) please follow this link to the changels website and find all the info put together in one pdf, or (always first with the good news of course!) the lower east blog here.

The NEW BUSINESS blog is also up and running, still in its very beginning…

You are also very welcome to attend the open door event in the Innovations Dorf in Bern on March 13th, where the New Business has it’s own window. More info on that here.

Enough of links and words!

Report from an Urban Safari

In the last days of May Lower East held an Urban Safari in Berlin – a group of 17 very berlin-curious students and team-leaders from KaosPilots Switzerland, toured the streets, backyards, urban gardens and cool places of Berlin. Under our guidance we together explored the lively city for two days – most of the time on bikes. On our list were: Lower East Lab, MarkthalleNeun, Kantine, Our Berlin, Tempelhofer Freiheit, Agora Collective, Martin Gropius Bau & David Bowie, Maselli, Modulor, Prinzessinnen Gärten and much, much more.

The safari was very successful – beautiful smiles on all safari participants and the sun was shining (almost all the time).

New safaris in Berlin coming up in the late summer and in the autumn – dates will be announced soon.

Check out these impressions from our tour.

newspaper: changels news
The newspaper ©lowereast

The newspaper ©lowereast

We are happy to show and share the changels news!
An idea for a newspaper we at Lower East came up with some months ago together with the people from changels. In the very last days before Christmas we finished the design of the newspaper and it was immediately sent of to the printer in Switzerland. Now the 32-page newspaper is living it’s own life, spreading info and good news from the changels universe in Bern & Switzerland & the rest of the world.

changels is a coaching and consultant company from Bern, Switzerland (and a Lower East partner), and to explain the paper we bring a short extract from the welcome word:

“… it is time to share some good news with you and the rest of the world. We enjoy working with companies, teams and communities as well as with individuals from all areas of life. And we co-create our own inspirations, too: Launching the KaosPilots Switzerland here in Bern in October 2012, now already with 2 teams of international students learning to become creative leaders, responsible entrepreneurs and changemakers. Or initiating our Innovationsdorf here in Bern, an innovation village to bring cross-sectorial know how together to create new solutions. Creating a network of sustainable schools and communities. Designing Urban Safaris in Berlin, Bern and Cape Town. And offering trainings to really create New Business that feels right for us humans and uplifting for this entire planet Earth.“

Happy reading! Check out the pictures below – and/or read the full newspaper here:

Camillos Paladar is a pop-up (mostly in Copenhagen, Berlin and Bern) dinner concept with gorgeous food and remarkable wines. That alone is worth the journey. By chance, Mr. Camillo is similar to Mr. Smidstrup.

Helle Marietta and Jørgen Smidstrup have moved their design company, Lower East, from Copenhagen to Berlin by the end of 2011 and have been exploring the “arm, aber sexy“ city ever since. Matti Straub-Fischer, from changels, have joined the two for visits on several occasions and insisted on creating an opportunity for others to this diverse mix of creativity, design and playfulness. Together they arranged and hostet the first succesful Urban Safari’s – one in sunny and joyful days in November and one in cold and joyful days beginning of April this year.

Here is the deal for the May safari:
